How Can Cannabinoids Be Useful In medicine?
Currently the two cannabinoids of therapeutic interest, which are taken from the cannabis plant, are THC and CBD.
THC stimulates appetite and reduces nausea. Approved THC drugs are used for this purpose. THC also helps reduce pain, inflammation, and problems that affect muscle control.
CBD has no effect on mind or behavior. It may be helpful in decreasing pain and inflammation, controlling seizures of epilepsy and may even be used in the treatment of mental illness and addictions .
Recent studies have shown that cannabis extracts can help destroy some cancer cells and slow the growth of those associated with severe brain tumors.
Clinical trials are also under way to investigate the use of cannabis and its extracts for the treatment of various diseases such as:
- Autoimmune diseases: HIV / AIDS, multiple sclerosis , Alzheimer’s
- Disorders of Substance Use
- Mental disorders
Are older people more vulnerable to the risks of using medical cannabis?
The medicinal use of this plant is a fairly new use, so it is not really known what the effects are on people who are weak in health because of their age or illness.
Older people and those with diseases such as cancer or AIDS may be more vulnerable to the harmful effects of cannabis.
